Exposure to cold temperatures can be unpleasant for workers under certain circumstances, but it becomes a major safety concern when temperatures drop to extreme levels. When it comes to working in cold environments, our first instinct is to associate this thermal stress with outdoor work performed in freezing cold. However, this thermal stress also applies to work performed inside buildings, such as in refrigerated warehouses, for example.
To identify risks and implement preventive and corrective measures, it is essential to inform and train workers who are exposed to cold environments in the workplace. Frostbite and hypothermia, among other conditions, can occur suddenly, which is why workers must be aware of the warning signs and symptoms of these health issues.
