Crystalline silica - Rio Tinto (Code: R2098)

Beginner

Silica exists in its free state in crystalline or amorphous form and in a combined state as silicates. In its natural state, crystalline silica is present in many of the rocks that make up the Earth’s crust. As a result, crystalline silica is present in many products, such as bricks, mortar, paving stones, concrete, rock, granite, and sand.

Jobs that may expose workers to the inhalation of crystalline silica dust are found in most manufacturing and construction industries. However, the health effects of this mineral can be particularly severe and lead to disabling diseases, such as silicosis and lung cancer. It is therefore essential to adequately train workers on the risks and protective measures related to this contaminant, as well as to reduce occupational exposure to crystalline silica to the lowest level possible.
