Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a very powerful and versatile base. It is a widely used chemical due to its high basicity, which allows for effective pH control. Its excellent solubility in water, as well as its ease of transport, storage, and use, also contribute to its widespread application.
However, its use poses certain risks to workers. Caustic soda and its aqueous solutions can cause, upon exposure at sufficient concentrations, chemical burns to the skin, eyes, and respiratory and digestive mucous membranes. The effects of chronic exposure are also irritative in nature. It is therefore essential to properly train workers on its safe use.
